SQL Server Installation using Configuration File

SQL Server Installation using Configuration File

The ConfigurationFile.ini file is a text file which contains the set of parameters in name/value pairs along with descriptive comments
SQL Server generates the Configurationfile.ini file on the Ready to Install step

Path of Configuration.ini file:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SetupBootstrap\Log\20180430_153855\ConfigurationFile.ini

In Log folder, there will a subfolder based on a timestamp of when you went through the SQL Server installation.

Two ways to install using configuration file:
1. By using wizard :
It uses user interface, use of mouse for terms and conditions and other features.

2. By using command line install
You may use a silent installation to avoid interacting with the client installation dialogs and you may automatically run the silent setup in a log-on script or through the registry. Silent setup uses the configuration.ini file.

By Using Wizard:

1. Right Click on setup and run as Administrator

2. Go to advanced tab and click on install based on configuration file

3. Give path of configuration file and click open

This will automatically select features based on condiguration instance id and user name etc.

Rest steps are same as Installation.

By Using command:

Performing a Silent Client Installation Using the CONFIGURATION.INI File.

Following are syntax to use the configuration file: To specify the configuration file at the command prompt:
Setup.exe /ConfigurationFile=MyConfigurationFile.INI
You may use a silent installation to avoid interacting with the client installation dialogs and you may automatically run the silent setup in a log-on script or through the registry. Silent setup uses the configuration.ini file.
